First time here...my husband has been diagnosed with throat and neck cancer. Wanting to know what survival rate is for this type. He is strong and very positive but I want to know some facts to see what we are about to go in to. This all just feels so foreign to me and I don't like to be in the dark. Thank you.

I was diagnosed with cancer of the back of tongue that had spread to the lymph nodes 5 years ago. After surgical removal and radiation I seem to be cancer free. Lost my appetite because of loss of taste and It was painful to swallow during the radiation phase. Survival rate depends on the stage of the cancer and whether it is hpv type.Hpv type does better. I feel great now and taste has 90% returned. Good Luck

HI KAT,
WELCOME ! SURVIVAL RATES DEPEND ON STAGING AND TREATMENT PLAN. HIS POSITIVITY AND YOURS WILL PLAY A HUGE PART . GET YOURSELF A GOOD DATE PLANNER W/ SPACE FOR TAKING NOTES. IT CAN BECOME VERY CHAOTIC. ALL THE BEST ...

Thank you Possum for sharing. Knowing others have went on this journey is
comforting...not for the ones who endured it but comforting to know we have
a huge chance of beating this. Yeah the swallowing part is really getting
to my husband already with the tonsils out. Frustrating when it hurts to
swallow food you just readily ate with no problems. We have hope now and
that is thanks to all here...thank you!!
yes, the cancer is a tough one. his positive attitude will help above all. one of the real challenges can be when the chemo and radiation are finished. radiation i had for my head and neck cancer was very intense and caused damage to other areas whilst killing the cancer. that's the trade off. Ask questions! If you are not satisfied with the answers find a new oncologist; also make certain his primary doctor is in the loop of info.
as far as longevity? no one knows. i have heard a number of %'s. focus on getting him well and move on to enjoying each day as best you can.

Know I'm replying almost a month later but a lot has been going on. Husband is trying to stay positive and I have my meltdowns but we are going forward. He starts radiation and chemo this week. We are satisfied with the doctors and the plan they have set up for him. We are trying to stay positive and I have stopped looking at the longevity...looking at today and what inspires on this day. Thanks for all of the comments...moving forward now...thanks

I have had exactly the same thing. He will probably get Chemo & Radiation. I had 6 months of this treatment packed in to 6 weeks. A bit rough, but the after effects are long term and very frustrating. I find fatigue to be the worst. Memory loss, short term. Do not let them CUT! Good luck and a speedy recovery
