Thick saliva

Posted by willieb @willieb, Oct 1, 2017

Hello! How everyone is having a GREAT Sunday. Recently I've been experiencing thick saliva in the back of my throat. It seems to be interfering with my voice prosthesis. Does anybody have any tricks to thin out this saliva? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I certainly fight that problem. Gargling ginger ale or sprite helps. I can also limit it by watching what I eat. In the last three years I have become aware of what increases it for me. I suggest you watch what you eat for a few weeks and see if something create more than others. For instance ice cream is a killer for me. I also had to change my protein shakes to vegetable based. Whey protein increases it substantially. I cheated last week and it immediately increased. Today is much better.

Thanks Tom! I will certainly pay closer attention to what I'm eating.

Have you tried rinsing with a salt & baking soda in warm water solution? During treatment, I was advised to use this to thin the secretions and it seemed to help a great deal. It's worth a try...?

I gargle with warm water and salt in the morning and at night before i go to bed. I feel it does help.

You might try over the counter Mucinex and see if it works.

I gargle with diet sprite or diet ginger ale.
