Hello all . I an new here but not new to Cancer . I had NHL 10 years ago and was treated with Rituxan and Chop .
Now I am in my 5th week of treatment with is radiology and chemo .
I have to say that I am struggling .
Currently now can not eat any solid foods and everything that I puree can be challenge as well . It hurts to swallow anything this solid and my tastes are all whacked and I can barely finish a cup of water .
The side effects are moving in on me hard . I and I was told Friday that this is going to get worse before it gets better . 5th week for these effects to be at their worst .. just in time for the Christmas today . I'm not gonna lie .. This flat out sucks.. I have never had my body change on me like this and its very very tough to deal with . I love the fact that since I stopped smoking that my sense of smell is now very sharp . I love smelling foods that I know that I can not eat . I think that I am malnourished and borderline dehydrated as now for no reason I will break out into a rash and it itches real bad .
From everything I have read here it looks like the side effects of the radiology could last for a long time . My last treatment is 1/15/19 . Everyone keep saying " you got this " but deep down inside I feel like I am slowly loosing .. Needless to say .. this has put a major strain on my marriage also .
I came here because I need people to talk with . I need support .. I need you .

I can totally relate with what you are going thru. I am 10 months post rad..had 6 weeks twice a day..no chemo. At the end I carried rolls of quarters to keep the scale up. Did not want a tube. Thru it all, I could eat and drink some but still lost 30 lbs off a lanky frame. Thankfully 20 are back but plateaued off.
I found the last 2 weeks and especially the first 3 weeks after th be the total worst. I would lay in bed and say I had to get up to eat.but could not move.
Time went by and the healing continues. Hang tough, it will get better!!
Follow..I went thru VA in Gainesville Fl and the very first thing they did after radiation was a pet scan an set up a swallowing protocol..exercises and salt tests and imaging. They caught my throat starting to swell and gave steroids. This is a must test after radiation.
11 months and all clear.
April 15th will mark 3 months since my last RAD. I had my PET on Friday and I am praying that it comes back clean . The only thing is that I am having some trouble with eating here and there . I have what I think is scar tissue on the back of my mouth were it ends and the throat begins . Seems like it gets aggravated by something I try to eat and it then makes me stop eating and I start sweating . When does this go away ? I wish I could eat regularly but this is making it a challenge . Sometimes its with food that I know I can put down . Its very frustrating . My tastes are still shot but I expected that . I just want this swallowing sensation to end .
Hi there
I had six weeks radiotherapy ended March 2018 and same issues had to go on ensure drinks and just keep trying soft foods even now can’t eat hard things to much as also dry mouth issues
And swallowing but u will get there any other advice just ask me and will try help
Congratulations for bearing through the ordeal - you will continue to be glad you did as you continue to recover.
I am happy to report that even my taste buds are now getting back to closer to normal (9 months after end of rads, but the process of their recovery began much earlier -- it is just a long slow process).
I have now recovered about half of the 20 - 25 # I lost from a pretty skinny frame (plateaued months ago) and am back to vigorous bicycling (as my day to day transportation around the city) and that has been a blessing --- Keep it up --- it just keeps getting better. Blessings. JR
I am 1 year 2 months post radiation and cancer free. Still a hassle with mucus and choking. You mentioned Shands
.I went to VA while h is partnered with Shands and they were all over the swallow protocol from the beginning. I was a huge help. E drone should make sure that is done. Sorry for butting in here.
Thanks for the insight - what is the "swallowing protocol"

congrats on finishing what i think is one of the more difficult treatments to go through. Have you tried smoothies or milkshakes with protein? I find these to be a great source of calories and they go down pretty easy

They were basically swallowing exercises that I was to do daily. One was after every swallow..keep mouth closed and go hmmm and swallow again. The main one that really helped me was to swallow like you were swallowing a golf ball..a power swallow. helps keep throat muscles strong. Hope that helps..hang tough it does get betyer.
