Hi All, I had stage 3 oropharyngeal cancer caused by HPV 3 years ago and was treated at Dana-Farber with both radiation and chemotherapy. I have been cancer free since my treatments. I just want to assure any of you who are going through this treatment that although it may seem unbearable as you go through the final stages of treatment, that there is a definite light at the end of the tunnel whereby you will be just fine. The treatments are well worth your effort. At the end of three months after treatment, you will begin feeling good and at the end of one year after treatment, you will feel very normal. My side affects from radiation are minimal. Taste is not as good as pre-treatment and I do have some dry mouth which will not go away, but believe me these are so easy to adapt to. My message to all those going through this cancer, hang in there because it is well worth your effort!! You will feel normal again soon!

I know just what you are going through. Did they insert a feeding tube? Yes, the treatment for throat cancer is one of the most difficult however the good news is IT WORKS!!! Just know ahead of time that the next few months are going to be ugly while at the same time knowing this will save your life and in six months you will have all this behind you and feeling back to normal. Believe it cause it is a fact!!! Feel free to contact me at gfenters@gmail.com any time for support.

HPV stands for human papillomavirus. 'HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of males and females. These HPV types can also infect the mouth and throat. A person can have HPV even if years have passed since he or she had sexual contact with an infected person. Most infected persons do not realize they are infected or that they are passing the virus on to a sex partner. It is also possible to get more than one type of HPV.' (Center for Disease Control & Prevention Feb 2013). HPV can be categorized into three types: non-genital, low-risk genital and high-risk genital strains. The number after HPV indicates the strain (type).

HPV is a sexually transmitted disease which can cause cervix cancer in women
and oropharyngeal cancer in men. Michael Douglas's cancer was caused by
this and it is know to be a more common cause for cancer in men. A further
explanation can be seen in this website:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_papillomavirus You may also see a
further explanation on the Dana-Farber website as well as WebMD, etc.
