Hi All, I had stage 3 oropharyngeal cancer caused by HPV 3 years ago and was treated at Dana-Farber with both radiation and chemotherapy. I have been cancer free since my treatments. I just want to assure any of you who are going through this treatment that although it may seem unbearable as you go through the final stages of treatment, that there is a definite light at the end of the tunnel whereby you will be just fine. The treatments are well worth your effort. At the end of three months after treatment, you will begin feeling good and at the end of one year after treatment, you will feel very normal. My side affects from radiation are minimal. Taste is not as good as pre-treatment and I do have some dry mouth which will not go away, but believe me these are so easy to adapt to. My message to all those going through this cancer, hang in there because it is well worth your effort!! You will feel normal again soon!

HPV stands for human papillomavirus. 'HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of males and females. These HPV types can also infect the mouth and throat. A person can have HPV even if years have passed since he or she had sexual contact with an infected person. Most infected persons do not realize they are infected or that they are passing the virus on to a sex partner. It is also possible to get more than one type of HPV.' (Center for Disease Control & Prevention Feb 2013). HPV can be categorized into three types: non-genital, low-risk genital and high-risk genital strains. The number after HPV indicates the strain (type).

HI GREG,

WHEN I ORIGINALLY ASKED THE QUESTION TO CHARLES ABOUT HPV 3, I WAS EXPECTING
HIM TO REPLY, WHICH I STILL WOULD. I UNDERSTAND THE GENERAL INFO ABOUT HPV.
WHAT I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT, ARE THE STRAINS. FROM THE RESEARCH I HAVE DONE,
STRAINS 16 & 18 ARE THE CULPRITS OF CANCER. HOW DOES # 3 PLAY INTO ALL THIS
? ARE DIFFERENT STRAINS MORE AGGRESSIVE THAN OTHERS ? ETC . . . THANKS
!
