Carcinoma in Situ of Vocal Chords and Voice Box

Hi, I am new here and to be honest I am not sure if I should be even asking such a question seeing just how much some of you are suffering at the minute, my heart goes out to each and every one of you and to your family and support circle as cancer touches on so many lives in so many ways but so far what I have read you are an inspiration to others, to be open and talking about your experiences is a wonderful thing to do for others and I hope you find peace and comfort in it for yourselves too.

I was wondering if anyone started off at the first stage of diagnosis being Carcinoma in Situ? During my last pregnancy two years ago I lost my voice completely. Once I had my son I was able to undergo investigations and was diagnosed with CIS of vocal chords and voice box. The specialist monitored me 3 monthly after shaving away a lesion on my chords and on my last visit moved me to 6 months, however, my voice has changed again and has been coming and mostly going for the last 6 weeks. I am not due back to the specialist for another 3 months and was thinking about asking for an earlier appointment, however, I really don't want to be taking up their time if it is nothing to worry about, that said I feel I owe it to my children to make sure I don't take unnecessary risks with my health. His approach is just to watch the cancer and if/when it invades to then do a course of treatment.

Has anyone ever started at this stage and would you have any advice you could offer?

Thank you so much.

Thinking of you, Sarah

Hi @smbbyme, don't worry about taking up there time! An earlier appointment to address your recent concerns seems important! Call your doctors and keep us posted.

Thanks @megm I have taken your advise and phoned and asked for an earlier appointment, the receptionist said she would say it to the team and if the team felt it necessary they would advise her where to slot me in. If I get an earlier appointment they will send it out in the post.

Hi Sarah,
I hope you've managed to get your earlier appointment. I know how it feels when you want things to move quicker.

I was diagnosed with CIS on the vocal chord back in November, but my consultant merely wants to monitor me. He actually said to me "its not cancer it will go away by itself, hopefully"
I've to go back at the end of February.

I'm finding it interesting and somewhat comforting that others with CIS are also being monitored rather than treated, waiting for the cancer to turn invasive before anything is done. Its frustrating for us that are living with it.

Hi Sarah. I was diagnosed with carcinoma in situ of my voice box earlier this year. I've learned since then that according to my pathology report, I have the high grade type, which has most chance of turning into cancer. How is your situation? I've had 2 surgeries so far and this has changed my life..I have older kids (I'm a single mom) but still worry about them, if anything were to happen. Keep me posted, if you would, because I too have the same diagnoses.

Carcinoma in situ of vocal cords here. Go asap. You aren't wasting their time. Go go go! I'm coming up on 4th surgery in 4 years. I'm not saying you would be like that too but always the sooner you go the better!! Just realized this was some months ago though! How's are you doing now?? Your doctor sounds exactly like my doctor. He has the same treatment plan. Seeing as this will be my 4th surgery in 4 years I looked for alternative options. I found PDT I wrote a post about it today as well 🙂 Would love to talk more when you have more time. I don't know anyone else with cancer and especially not this type.

Glad to know I'm not the only one. 4th surgery in 4 years? Did your CIS ever progress to invasive at any point? Would love to hear from you. I am getting monitored every 3 months, I was diagnosed with CIS and had second surgery six months ago. What type of surgery did you have, was it CO2 laser?
