Experience with tongue reconstruction?

Posted by cchasephd @cchasephd, May 26, 2013

Anyone have experience with tongue reconstruction? My husband is being evaluated in the next week or so for this procedure due to his being fed by PEG tube since his oral cancer surgery in June, 2009. Please let us know. Thank you.

Hi, I’m new to this group and wondering how your husband is doing? My dad has been given this choice for tongue cancer and still weighing options, thank you.

Hi
So sorry to hear about your husband.
I had can surgery twice on my tongue. First time in 2005 and the second time in 2020. On both the occasions I did not have Chemo
First time a small area of the tongue in the front was removed and it was at the fist stage My surgeon used senitol biopsy procedure which means did not do open neck surgery. Second time in 2020 it was a open neck surgery. I was left with 1/3 rd of the tongue
My view about reconstruction is that, in my case did not go for reconstruction but over the time my speech has improved a great deal on both the occasions
The speech was not clear for the first six months during which time I did a lot of tongue exercises with the help of speech therapist.
At present my speech is very good. I have not taken any prescription medication which I found was aggravating my tongue so I started to replace them with vitamins by doing trial and error on my own as doctors are not helpful to advice us. I take vitamin supplements for heart too. Started with multivitamins and I now found out that magnesium and Zinc have helped me a great deal. I feel I am in a good state of health after throwing away all prescribed medications
I do not look or sound like a cancer patient and I take the full credit of it after the surgery. I still see my surgeon once every three months as I made him interested in how I managed my mouth which looks very healthy.
Hope it helps you reading my tongue surgery
Best wishes
