Oral Cancer

Posted by Milroybum25 @milroybum25, Nov 9, 2017

I had surgery back on January 31 to remove a cancerous tumor from my jawbone. It was a 14 hour surgery to remove the tumor from the jawbone and reconstruct the jaw with skin and bone from my leg. I had over 35 lymph nodes removed, a tooth, and nerves. After surgery I had a feeding tube and a trache. After those came out, I started 6 weeks of radiation, 5 days a week. It has been a long journey and I still don’t feel good but I am blessed to be cancer free.

My wife had the same surgery on August 11th. They removed 32 lymph nodes and found squamous cell carcinoma in 5 of them. They also found another tumor on her voice box. She also lost teeth. She had to stop radiation for several weeks due to becoming extremely ill (she lost 9 pounds in 4 days and she was already a size 2 before the surgery).

Radiation started again this week and they are hopeful that radiation will take care of her throat tumor. She is scheduled to end radiation the week of Christmas barring any other set backs.

So our Christmas list is her getting her through radiation on schedule and for me to land employment. I think that I have the easier task by far.

I hope that you are doing better now and I can relate (as an observer) how difficult recovery is from this procedure. Oh, her surgery was 13 hours. Keep getting better!

Had tonsil cancer stage 4, 8 years ago. Went thru all the same treatments, chemo, radiation and I am still here but it's a different me. I have no complaints about the extra years God has blessed me with extra years to live life. So you see it can be beaten. God bless you in your journey through this illness!
