Treatment Decision Making Stage IV Tonsillar Cancer

Posted by jscprop @jscprop, May 7, 2016

I was just diagnosed with localized stage 4 tonsillar cancer and need to talk about surgical vs non surgical options.

Hi, I was diagnosed with the same in 2015. I did ultimately decided on the chemo and radiation. I did go to see if I was a candidate for tors surgery but I was not. However the way it was told to me was that if I did chemo and radiation then if it reoccurred I would still possibly have surgery to lean back on. I am hapy for the choice I made as I became NED at the end of 7 chemos and 39 radiation treatments. Whichever you do please go to a top level teaching/research school for another opinion. If you have any direct questions please feel free to contact me.

Thank you Seth. Was yours HPV positive or negative? The NED result is comforting. <br />

Starting concurrent chemoradiation a week from today for locally advanced tonsil cancer tested HPV positive but I also have a long smoking history. Did you have Cisplatin? TOMO radiation? I'm 74 but in generally good health. You give me hope. Thanks for posting.

Yes I had 7 weekly Cisplatin and around 37 rounds of radiation. Consider yourself lucky that you are HPV+ as well because there is a higher cure rate. As I said I was stage 4A and had two local lymph nodes. I was not in a major cancer research university, I did it with the help of two very good local doctors. I do have a connection now to Miami U as my ENT is there. Keep you head up high and try not to be afraid. You will and can make it through this..good luck.

Thank you for your encouraging response. My Cisplatin is scheduled for once every 3 weeks rather than weekly. Will need to ask chemo doc about differing intervals.
