I have stage 4 head neck, would like to know what others are finding most effective for a good nights sleep. It's 3:36 am and I'm up at the computer unable to sleep again.

That's terrible Tom. Around 3am seems to be the worst time for being awake. Sometimes I take 5mg of Valium before bed and it helps but I don't want to get addicted to it. My biggest problem is a panic attack at around 3am but I try to pray to go to sleep again. Before my Stage 4 bone mets diagnosis I was worried if I took a painkiller.

I use Klonapin , its a central nervous system relaxer. Sleep like a baby. There are many more that may work.

Not if I'm getting a good nights sleep. If your not up at 3: am thats good, right? In the beginning you might feel a bit hungover, but not if amount is correct. I would say to start a 1 mg. Consult with doc. Trazadone will knock you out , non addictive. It was a very old anti-depressant, that did not work , that they brought back for sleep. Good luck...please keep me informed ..Bud

Well its 4am and I just woke up - this is better. Thanks for all your responses. I went out last night with one of my care-givers - he suggested trying meletonin (sp?) first. although he said it takes a couple of weeks to work. I must say there are some advantages to getting up a little early - it's so quiet in the house - a great time to read the bible, and write my blogs.

You need your sleep to heal. My doctor  gave me trazadone wich usually helps a lot. When it doesn't i take an ambien. Always ask your doctor because sleep is very important.

If it helps you're not alone. I had a neck dissection 3 weeks ago and have only had a few good nights sleep since. Before I would fall asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow and not wake up until the alarm went off. Amazing how quick things changed. Doc's have tried a couple of drugs and neither has really helped much. Good luck.
