I have finished my chemo/radiation treatment 3 weeks ago. I have been using a feeding tube thruout the latter part of my treatment and have not taken food by my mouth now for about 6 weeks. I am now trying to swallow liquids in very small amounts with out having much luck (know that I did not attempt to swallow anything while using strictly the PEG). Any suggestions?

Pick up your food put to mouth and swallow. I also had the peg for 6 weeks but was attempting to eat however little you can. Do it hurt to swallow? Its a long slow progress. I am 1 year out and still suffer every day. Your life has changed forever. Best of luck. The one thing we all do daily is push and keep pushing yourself. God bless you. Keep in touch , let us know how your progress is doing

Hi Mitch, Does it give you pain to swallow? It seems like you're afraid to swallow... At 6 weeks you should be able to swallow. Please explain how it feels to swallow.

I can swallow small amounts of liquid(teaspoon) slowly. If I try larger amounts it seems to be going down the wrong pipe. The lower part of the throat is still a little sore but getting better every day. My last day of radiation was June 17th.

If your last day of treatment is June 17 then you have not even started recovery. You should not be able to swallow yet, it is sore. You have a long time to recover yet. I am 14 months out and still fighting after effects. They are with you for life. You will improve slowly.
Just remember your starting a new life. It will never be the same again.
All the best, keep in touch

I had a PEG tube too. I'm a year and half past that. Now I try to eat something with sauce once a day and drink Ensure three or four times a day.
