Hi Group. My name is Kelli and I am 41. I was diagnosed with Nasopharyngeal Cancer on May 1 of this year. I have gone through three rounds of chemo (cisplatin, 5FU and taxotere). Today I started my chemo (ciplatin) and radiation phase for the next 7 weeks. I am just wondering if there are any long-term survivors of this cancer. It is in my head, 2 lymph nodes in my neck anda small spot on my pelvis. I am just feeling overwhelmed because I really don't know of anyone who has this cancer. I am feeling sad and angry...but I want to be hopeful. Most days I am but today has been hard. Thanks for reading!

Hi Kelli
I have not heard of this type of cancer, what are your symptoms?, I really pray that you will beat it and meanwhile the treatment is tolerable, I think most of us are angry and sad with cancer, its like a thunderbolt to our existence, but many do survive and years after are still here to tell us.
God bless you Helen

Hi Kelli -- I am so sorry for your diagnosis, news that is never easy to absorb. Please know there are tools (like cancer connect) out there to help. Are you at Dana Farber? You might consider joining a support group (by phone or in person), or even the One on One program which pairs up newly diagnosed patients with a similar volunteer patient farther along in the journey. Kelli, you may be like me -- not really the "support group type"....but I can attest to the value of such tools. Practical info, tips, experiences, stories, pitfalls, hopes -- you may find comfort and solace in a small universe of those challenged by cancer.

PS I was diagnosed on my 53rd birthday in January with stage IV BC, ten years after my first diagnosis. My world turned upside down. While my overall health is very good (exercise, run 2 miles/day) with the cancer responding to drug therapy, I am grateful for support group help (virtual or otherwise).

Stay tough. You are surrounded by a loving army of fighters.

Hugs, LynnA

Hi. My name is Dee. I am 75. I am not yet a long time survivor of nasopharyngeal cancer but feel that I am heading that way. I was diagnosed on July 2, 2012, completed six cycles of R-CHOP in November, 2012, had clean PET scan in May of 2013. I go back next week for 9 month followup. I feel great and am regaining hair and an increased sense of well-being. I, too, had feelings of sadness and loss as well as anger. It does get better day by day. It helps to talk about it and also continue to do what you love, even if it is only for a short time each day. Walking is great exercise as well as helping with mood improvement.

Hi Kelli
I asked you the symptoms because apparently my mothers cousin had a nasal cancer she was quite young, I know she had radiotherapy and other treatment, she survived it even though it had spread and lived to old age, I hope this helps.

I have been fighting breast cancer for twenty-six years with thirteen years
cancer free. I was on cancer treatment pills but they were not working so
back on a new IV chemo. Side effects will be new. Pray for me.

My main symptom was that my eye sight changed overnight! The other symptoms are so vague--ringing in the ears, sinus pressure, sore throat -- things that just feel like normal every day symptoms. It is very scary to go from feeling so great to being diagnosed stage 4b cancer!

What is R-CHOP? Curious as to what stage you were diagnosed at. Glad you are doing well now though!!!

Hi Kelli
It must have been scary and the fact that cancer can deposit itself anywhere in the body, sometimes without warning, finding that it is advanced is frightening, but of course that is the problem with the disease, but accidents strike as well, its strange that life is that way, I do hope your treatment does the job and gets rid of it.

kelli,
i have head and neck cancer. the tumor on the base tongue and in the nodes (neck).
in my case the cancer was not found in other cavity parts of the body. however, that is why the chemo is there to try and capture significant cancer that has run amuck from the neck and head area.. another factor in my diagnosis is my cancer was not caused from alcohol or tobacco, it was/is viral. as for me , i am in week 6 radiation with 2 chemo or so to go. after that it is a waiting game.
