Head and Neck

I was first diagnosed with tonsil cancer in April of 2015. I was given an
NED in August of 2015. The comes new years and Im getting sick, pain in the
throat , teeth and ears. I was freaked. I was on vacation to see my mom In
NYC as she is going through treatment for stage 4 lung cancer. I decided to
see and ENT at Mt. Sinai. They took a biopsy and it came back clear. My ENT
in Florida now wants to do a deeper biopsy under general anesthesia. I
know I much rather not do it and am concerned with going under general. I
forgot to mention they found a hole in my throat where the tonsils used to
be. It is causing a lot of pain, even though I am on some pretty heavy pain
medication. I am looking for input and suggestions...Thanks

Hi @ponderit, could you get another opinion just to see if there are other biopsy options? Sorry you are having to deal with this pain.

Hi Megm,
This is an issue that we are thinking about a lot. I am not very big on elective surgery. It seems very invasive to get a biopsy. THe ENT I went to in NYC will be getting touch with me tomorrow so I can speak to him about it. He graduated Yale and works at Mt Sinai. My Local ENT Rochester in NY and Georgetown in Washington DC and works at Miami U. Would you take that into consideration? I am so confused. First the Pet then a biopsy that were both positive news. And then a local ENT that wants to put me under a general anesthesia to get a deeper biopsy. Thanks again for the input.

Hi @ponderit, It definitely sounds like you are asking the right questions. That's great that the PET was clear in addition to the initial biopsy. I have read that biopsies of that area do typically require anesthesia because it is a complex procedure. Hopefully your conversation with the other ENT will give you additional information to make an informed decision. It sounds like both ENTs are well credentialed. Is there anything they can do surgically for the hole in your throat? Do they think that is the source of the you getting sick and the pain in your throat/teeth/and ears?
