Esophageal Lumen Restoration post radiation

Posted by Dotti @dotti, Jan 26, 2018

My husband’s battle with SCC throat cancer started 1yr ago, when in 6wks he lost 30 lbs, had emergency hospital admission to secure PEG feeding tube and hemp port once his throat cancer was dx. We followed “standard routine treatment” of 7-wks daily radiation with a 1X weekly cisplatin IV treatment. During and post therapy he couldn’t swallow anything, suffered the excessive mucus most experience, did all recommended swallow/speech exercises and finally in October the oncology team confirmed his esophagus was collapsed from excessive (though deemed standard) radiation threatment. We were referred and accepted into a specialty oncologist procedure - ELR - to attempt to penetrate the blockage and then slowly via months of surgery expand his esophagus. Has anyone experience a total inability to swallow post throat cancer threatment and tried this procedure? We are going forward next week, just curious is anyone can share their experience.
