Ask the Expert: Question about HPV Status

Question: Does HPV status affect treatment and when should I be tested for HPV (I have throat cancer)?

Response: HPV testing is typically done during the initial pathologic evaluation of your tumor. It can be performed on the primary tumor site or in the lymph nodes.
One of the most active areas of research in our field is treatment deintensification in HPV-related oropharynx cancer. However, according to the latest National Cancer Center Network guidelines, HPV status does not change treatment recommendations, and any treatment deintensification or alteration of treatment based upon HPV status should be done in the context of a clinical trial.
