Advice - Employment

Posted by Jeff @spiritofsol, Sep 15, 2017

I am a caregiver to my wife who is being treated for Stage IV squamous cell carcinoma of the retromolar trigone. We moved to Columbus in April, she had major surgery in August and I just got laid off. We are new here...is there any employment support organization for cancer caregivers? I need to take care of my wife financially as well as emotionally. I would be most appreciative for any advice. Thanks

I'm sorry that no one had any resources to share. I don't live in your area, nor do I know of any employment support for caregivers, but you might try your local office of the American Cancer Society or this local support group: http://cancersupportohio.org/
Good luck. It's hard enough getting through the whole cancer ordeal, without being unemployed as well.

Jeff,
Google "financial support for unemployed caregivers" if you haven't already. Also, if your wife is eligible for Social Security disability she should apply for that.

Jeff,
I hope you've applied for unemployment because it exists for people like you, those who have been laid off. If you can apply for it, do NOT say a word about being your wife's caregiver as one reason you need the money because they'll say you're not free to work. There's no place on the application that asks about that. In most states you can apply online.

Thank you and no, I have not taken any action yet. Letting the shock sink in and applying for new opportunities....what I need is immaterial as we both know - the focus is on my wife. I am still in a very surreal cloud and this is beyond painful but all I have is faith and hope. Prayers to others going through this.....they don't deserve it.

Thanks to all. I'm interviewing and finishing my last week at work. Radiation treatments have started and so far so good but every day for 7 weeks is daunting but heck, it's easy on me.....she is the one going through hell. I was so ignorant. I had no idea that cancer impacted so many people and I am truly an idiot and I apologize to all of those that have paved these paths before. I need friends, I need a sympathetic ear and I miss family. I thank my new network of friends who responded and all of those before and after me. I will pray for all and God Bless everyone and thank you Charles Dickens for writing that last verse.

Good morning and thanks! I have been throwing out some bait and I have had a few nibbles but nothing certain. I am also getting some networking assistance from a local church and have a meeting with a sourcing group next week. I am trying every angle I can think of and have to rely on faith to get through this. One positive is that it has allowed me to spend this week to be with my wife full-time which is advantageous since she is going through complications with radiation.

I'm new to this group . I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the right tonsil at stage 4 a little over a year ago . My husband and I were in the same position as you are. I needed him and he couldn't be in two places at once but before I was diagnosed I was an in home support care giver for his mother for 6 years. I got paid to do so through a provider group through the state of California called in home support services. I'm not sure if they have a program like that where you are but call your local office of the department of social services to inquire . You may not receive much of a stipend but it's better than nothing and definitely help your wife get on social security disability. I did 7 weeks of radiation and chemo treatments and I applaud you as your wife's caregiver because my husband and daughter are mine and it's a long road for you too. Good luck and positive thoughts for you both .
